The Beginning

Martin J. Loeblein Jr., owner of a small business for more than 20 years, along with a group of other small business owners, founded Locoolly because they wanted an Internet search engine to serve the local marketing needs of fellow small business owners.

After talking to several small business owners within their community, they found that many of them shared the same desire. The founders of Locoolly, along with other small business owners felt leaders in the Internet marketing industry offer multiple online business services well-fitted to the needs of large companies, but these opportunities often are not within the means of, or well-suited to, smaller businesses; they felt that purchasing prominent Internet rankings were cost-prohibitive to small businesses. Also, they saw weaknesses in the results of Internet searches for products and services. These weaknesses include search engines and directories that yield results cluttered with unnecessary links and references often related only weakly to the actual search query, making it harder to find the accurate information being sought. Local businesses with relevant information often get buried on page 3 of the results.

To address this frustration and more, Locoolly’s founders designed an elegant directory that refines the search to commerce only and allows the user to decide how far away they want to search. The user gets to decide the size of their “community” with every search.

The Power of the Community

So, what do we mean by “Community”? Even though “Community” is a simple word that we use regularly, often its meaning gets lost or overlooked. An article from the Stanford Social Innovation Review succinctly describes our mantra.

“It’s about people. First and foremost, community is not a place, a building, or an organization; nor is it an exchange of information over the Internet. Community is both a feeling and a set of relationships among people. People form and maintain communities to meet common needs.”

Locoolly launched in Yuba City, California. This rural community has a population of approximately 66,000 residents and is representative of many other communities across the country. There are around 400 businesses within the city limits that are members of the local Chamber of Commerce and around 4,000 within the Yuba Sutter Metropolitan area, most of which are small to medium size with 1-10 employees.

When their research expanded from rural to urban communities, the founders concluded that the desire of the small business owners located in those communities is the same as the small business owner in a small rural community.

Whether a person lives in a rural city like Yuba City, or an urban suburb in a large metropolitan area, people love their communities, it is where they live, go to school, shop, and fellowship.
